Description

MIRON DUCA
Romania | Artist

Miron Duca was born on February 12, 1952 in Boianu Mare, in Bihor and died on February 25, 2018. He graduated from the “Ion Andreescu” Institute of Arts in Cluj-Napoca in 1975, between 1989-1991 he studied museology at “Nicolae Grigorescu” Arts Institute from Bucharest. He settled in Bistrita in the mid-70s, being a museographer at the city’s Bistrita Museum for decades. The permanent section within the Museum was patronized with love and competence by the plastic artist, as museographer at the Arts Section. Employed since 1976 at this cultural institution, Miron Duca was effectively involved with the recognized mind and talent, in the redevelopment of this section, in its entirety, in a modern vision, corresponding to the latest European norms in the field and it was launched in the year 2008, being allocated the necessary funds according to the artist’s conception.
In 2010, the Bistrita-Năsăud Museum Complex publishes the catalog “Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Romanian Art” which includes works from the permanent exhibition of the Contemporary Art section and in its preface the museographer Miron Duca said about the existing heritage that “it took shape like a prescribed dream according to Dali’s surrealist laws. When I started the cultural activity it was hard to imagine that one day we would be able to organize a permanent gallery where the colleagues of a generation would sit carefully in the shy world of the museum. I had the feeling then that the art of the museum was made up of a series of pedestals on which the intangible values of culture, the visual books of civilization were carefully placed – to imagine yourself even close to this core was more than a dream, it was a feeling that he was missing, you couldn’t feel him because he crossed the border of the imaginary” (Miron Duca, Sărbtoarea pervirii, Foreword by Vasile Duda, Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Romanian Art, Edited by Complexul Muzeal Bistrița-Năsăud, Bistrița, 2010, p .5).
Since 1981 he has been a member of the Union of Visual Artists from Romania, painting section. An exponent of abstract expressionism in Romanian painting, he received a series of awards and distinctions, among which we mention: from the Presidency of Romania the “Cultural Merit” award (2004), honorary citizen of Bistrița-Năsăud county, from 2015, the national award for Painting of Union of Visual Artists from Romania (1993), first prize for painting at the Student Spring Festival (1973), diploma of excellence at the Liviu Rebreanu Salons (1999), the prize for Fine Art awarded by the Bistrita City Hall (2000), the Chisinau City Hall award at the Moldova Salons.
He exhibits on the artistic market in the country and organizes personal exhibitions in Cluj-Napoca, Târgu Mureș, Bucharest, Bistrița, Dej but also international ones in Besançon, Eisenstadt, Miscols. Since 1974, he has participated in most county exhibitions in Cluj-Napoca and Republican exhibitions in Bucharest, but also abroad in Frankfurt – in Barcelona, Athens, Belgrade, Sandomierz, Stalowa-Wola, Tarnobzeg, Montreal, Lisbon, Szombothely, Montreuil, Paris, Istanbul, Besançon, Caracas and Toronto. He participated in the national contemporary art symposia in Sîngeorz-Băi, Eforie nord, Rîmnicu Vîlcea, Lăzarea, Harasuki, Tescani, Sîngeorz Băi, Braniștea and Nicula, Călușeri, Sîngeorz Băi, Sîngeorgiu de Mureș, Sovata – being also for years one of the coordinators of the Colibița painting symposium, organized by the Bistrita County Center for Culture.
Miron Duca illustrates books by authors: David Dorian, Cornel Cotuțiu, Mircea Prahase, Olimpiu Nușfelean and magazines including: Echinox, Cadran, Pasaj. His works are in private collections in: Romania, Greece, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Israel, Holland, Poland, USA, Spain and England.
The artist Miron Duca was a well-known and appreciated representative of gestural abstractionism within the ̓80s generation, “who individualized himself in the group of artists from the new expressionism of painting. Without a unified aesthetic program, the wave of new artists, who asserted themselves during the period of maximum ideological pressure in the Socialist Republic of Romania, constantly proved themselves by refusing the imposed themes and gradually assuming a new sensibility” (Magda Cârneci, Anii ̓80 in Romanian art , in Experiment in Romanian Art since 1960/ Experiment in Romanian Art Since 1960, Bucharest, 1997, p. 53-58, p 56,57.).
