Description

JAIME ROMERO
Peru | Professor In The Pontifical Catholic University Of Peru

Jaime Romero (Lima, March 4, 1960) is a visual artist dedicated to painting, installation art, performances and to a lesser extent restoration and sculpture. He is currently 60 years old. She shares her work of artistic creation by teaching modeling, drawing, painting and composition at the Faculty of Art of the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú and at the Corriente Alterna School of Visual Arts. From its beginnings he was considered l’ enfant terrible of Peruvian painting. He has won several prizes for his work and today he is summoned as a jury in artistic competitions. His works are in museums and private collections.

The artist himself has given an account of his life through various interviews and reports that have appeared in various publications. He narrates his childhood in the following terms: “Since I was a child I was like a miracle. I was born and he gave me I don’t know what disease and they had to baptize me in an emergency, with Saint Martin de Porres as godfather. Out of gratitude I wore his habit until I was fourteen years old. In said interview it is mentioned that “with his habit on, and until he was 14, he recruited his cousins and organized processions in his house. His grandmother took him to church and they returned with three or four new cards each time. And figurines of saints. He wanted to be a priest. An aunt he loves very much dies and Jaime dedicated himself to painting, without losing the mystical. Since that aunt represented repression, so when she left I began to draw but I didn’t draw holy things but rather sacrilegious ones.” The organization of processions is a habit that the artist still practices. An interview about his Seraphic Spring exhibition lets us know that he “later joined the Franciscan Third Order of the Discalced. He knew the painting and hung the habits, although not the faith; In addition, the religious began to manifest itself in his works. He manifested himself confused with the mundane, the carnal, the forbidden. From 1981 to 1986, he studied painting and drawing formally at the Faculty of Plastic Arts of the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, where he graduated with first place in his class. His teachers were Adolfo Winternitz, Alejandro Alayza and Julia Navarrete.
